Prague architecture diversity

Prague architecture diversity The greatest treasures of Prague are the architectural and artistic monuments. They are ranging in period from the Romanesque through the Gothic to the Baroque, Rococo, Classical, and Neoclassical. Prague architecture diversity… Romanesque architecture in Prague The most notable Romanesque monument is probably the 10th-century Church of St. George, behind the north wall of Hradčany. Gothic architecture in Prague To the west is its more massive successor, the basically Gothic St. Vitus’s Cathedral, the twin spires of which dominate the city skyline. Other Gothic monuments include the Týn Church on Staroměstské (“Old Town”) Square; the elegant Powder Tower, marking the former city walls in what is now the busy Příkopy shopping area; the restored Bethlehem Chapel, where Jan Hus preached in the 15th century; and the St. Agnes Convent, built in 1234 and notable for its collection of 14th-century paintings. U Minuty House (At the Minute house) - the right one in the photo

U Minuty “At the Minute” House in the Old Town Square

“At the Minute” U Minuty House is a stunning example of the high-Renaissance architecture. Covered in ornate sgraffito decorations depicting rulers from the Hapsburg house, Greek mythology as well as references to biblical and Renaissance legends, this house is easily recognizable with such an impressive facade. The house “At the Minute”, originally a late-Gothic structure from the 15th century, was rebuilt in Renaissance style in late 16th century. The house, called “At the White Lion”, was used to be a pharmacy. A sculpture of a white lion is still there, at the corner of the building. The present name “At the Minute” means “at the diminutive”, because of the tobacco in little pieces, that used to be sold there. The writer Franz Kafka lived in the house with his family from 1889 to 1896. His three sisters Elli, Valli and […]

Charles Bridge / Karlův most

Charles Bridge

Prague Charles Bridge details – interesting information and facts Charles Bridge (Karlův most) is an historic bridge that crosses the Vltava river in Prague, Czech Republic. Its construction started in 1357 under the auspices of the famous King Charles IV. This new bridge was originally called Stone Bridge (Kamenný most) or Prague Bridge (Pražský most). And, as the only means of crossing the river Vltava (Moldau) until 1841, Charles Bridge was therefore the most important connection between Prague Castle and the city’s Old Town. Prague Charles Bridge details: Charles bridge is 621 metres (2,037 ft) long and nearly 10 metres (33 ft) wide, following the example of the Stone Bridge in Regensburg, it was built as a bow bridge with 16 arches shielded by ice guards. It is protected by three bridge towers, two of them on the Lesser Quarter side and the third one on the Old Town side.  The bridge is decorated by a continuous alley of 30 statues and statuaries, […]

Prague Castle - Golden Lane

Golden Lane

Golden Lane Prague Do you want to see a street where houses are so small that they fit more to dwarfs than to people? The Golden Lane is a row of miniature houses glued literally to the walls of the Prague Castle. They are coloured and the origin of some of them goes back to the 16 th century. The renowned writer Franz Kafka lived in the Golden Lane Prague for some time. From Tripadvisor.com comments: “Go there first before the tour groups arrive!“ Gorgeous little lane but try and get there before everyone else. Once the tour groups arrive the tiny lane is jam packed and you can’t take a good picture let alone walk down the street. … It Was Not Build With Tourists in Mind…:  Just few people used to live in these tiny houses, centuries ago. That’s what […]
