Prague spires Prague spires are mentioned even in the famous nickname of Prague as a “The city of a hundred spires” or “The city of one hundred spires”. So, is it true? Has Prague got really 100 spires? This name comes from the beginning of 19th century and the author was Josef Hormayer – Czech writer. The number of spires in Prague was 103 as it was counted by Czech mathematician Bernard Bolzano. Municipal House Prague History of the Municipal House Prague: It is one of the most famous Art Nouveau buildings in Prague. Municipal House is situated on the Republic Square (no. 5), in the neighborhood of the Powder Tower. It serves mainly ceremonial purposes. On the site of today’s Municipal House Prague was originally the residence of Czech kings, King’s Court. This complex was built around 1380. Architecture: Municipal House Prague was built in 1905-1912 on the basis of winning the architectural competition by architects Anthony Balšánek and Polivka. Decorated by the most significant Czech painters and sculptors of the early 20th century: Mikolas Ales, Karel Novak, Joseph Wenceslas Myslbek, Alfons Mucha and Jan Preisler. Strahov Monastery is a Premonstratensian abbey founded in 1143 by Bishop Jindřich Zdík, Bishop John of Prague, and Duke Vladislav II. It is located in Strahov, Prague, Czech Republic. One of the most important architectural monuments in the Czech Republic. The Strahov monastery, which was renewed in 1990, also houses the Museum of National Literature, part of the monastery is famous Strahov library and picture gallery. TOWER PARK PRAHA – TV TOWER Tower park Praha – TV Tower: Unquestionably the main landmark of the Žižkov district, at 216 m in height, it’s also the tallest building in the city. The Royal Canonry of Premonstratensians The Royal Canonry of Premonstratensians at Strahov is one of the oldest monasteries of the Premonstratensian Order in the world. It has been a working monastery practically ever since it was founded in 1143. Fire, the Hussite Wars, religious wars, and the Communists all failed to shut down this institution. The Charles Bridge has mathematical significance Charles IV laid the first stone of this famous monument at 5.31 am on July 9, 1357. The notoriously superstitious king was into astrology and numerology, and chose this date because of its written form: 1-3-5-7-9-7-5-3-1 (year, day, month, time). Add this information to the stunning views and saintly statues, and Charles Bridge is clearly a required item on any list of what to see in Prague. St. Vitus Cathedral St. Vitus Cathedral is the most important Czech Catholic church and landmark of Prague Castle. It is the largest and the most important temple in Prague.
