Metronome

Metronome

The gigantic Metronome occupies a symbolic spot on the map of Prague. It was directly on this spot that a gigantic monument to Joseph Stalin overlooked the city. It was demolished by dynamite in 1962, many years after his death. The seven-ton Metronome was installed in 1991 and was meant to be a symbol of the new era. The area surrounding it is now a paradise for skateboarders. Contacts Metronome Letenské sady Praha 7 Source: https://www.prague.eu/en/object/places/3003/metronome

John Lennon Wall (Zeď Johna Lennona)

John Lennon Wall (Zeď Johna Lennona)

Shortly after the death of John Lennon, this stone wall surrounding the Maltese Gardens was transformed into an impromptu memorial with a painting of the singer’s face. Lighted candles accompanied quotes from John’s songs about world peace and freedom, and soon slogans criticizing the totalitarian regime began to appear. With the arrival of democracy, the wall has lost some of its significance, but it still remains as a colourful display of messages and tags. Jan Palach Memorial – Sculptural composition of the Son’s and Mother’s Houses

Jan Palach Memorial – Sculptural composition of the Son’s and Mother’s Houses

This unique sculpture sited near the Faculty of Arts is devoted to the faculty’s student Jan Palach, commemorated for his self-immolation of 16 January 1969 in protest against the Soviet occupation. The sculptural pair called in the original ‘The House of the Suicide and The House of the Mother of the Suicide’ is a work of art by the American sculptor and architect of Czech origin, John Hejduk. The Son’s House, in a paler hue, represents Jan Palach. The Mother’s House is darker, as if corroded, representing Palach’s desperate mother. The installation with its symbolic flames is augmented by a plaque with the poem ‘The Funeral of Jan Palach’ by American writer David Shapiro. Hrabal Wall

Tatiana Svatošová created this colourful collage depicting the life and work of Bohumil Hrabal, one of the most famous Czech authors, on the outer wall of the Palmovka metro station on Na Hrázi Street back in 1999. Spread over an area of 333 m2, it features excerpts from Hrabal’s most famous works, his portrait, his typewriter, and even his cats, which the author, who lived in the courtyard of the derelict building at number 24, was particularly fond of. The Singing Fountain (Zpívající fontána)

The Singing Fountain (Zpívající fontána)

The Singing Fountain located in the garden of the Summerhouse of Queen Ann is one of the most beautiful Renaissance fountains north of the Alps. Charles Bridge (Karlův most)

Charles Bridge (Karlův most)

Prague’s oldest bridge was built to replace the Judith Bridge that had been badly damaged by floods in 1342. The Stone, or Prague, Bridge, called Charles Bridge since 1870, was begun in 1357 by Charles IV and was completed in 1402. The bridge is built of sandstone blocks, flanked at each end by fortified towers (Lesser Town Bridge Towers, Old Town Bridge Tower). From 1683 to 1928, 30 statues of saints were carved to decorate the bridge, the most famous of which is the statue of St John of Nepomuk.
