This church was originally built as a Romanesque basilica in the second half of the 12th century as a parish church for the settlement of Poříčí. Over the centuries it was rebuilt a number of times, and now contributes four towers to the Prague panorama. The church bells are located in a separate freestanding bell tower. The Church of St Martin in the Wall has been preserved as a nearly intact medieval work, as a rare example of valuable Romanesque and Gothic architecture. In the 13th century it adjoined the castle wall of Prague’s Old Town, hence its name “in the wall”. It hosts regular concerts of organ and classical music as well as exhibitions. The neo-Gothic Church of St Ludmila is one of the dominant features of the Vinohrady district. It was built according to designs by Josef Mocker from 1888 to 1892. Two 60 m towers, each with two bells, are like two hands clasped in prayer. The church is a brick three-aisled basilica with a transept in the shape of a cross. The original Romanesque and Gothic church was rebuilt in 1784 and converted into a residential house with small apartments. It wasn’t until 1985 that the crumbling building underwent a six-year renovation. The church was converted into a concert hall while preserving its original architectural qualities to the maximum extent possible. The current appearance of the church comes from a reconstruction in 1739-1745, which was probably based on plans of Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer. The builder was Ignazio Giovanni Palliardi. This baroque monastery church with its monumental Dutch-style facade was completed for the Carmelite Order in 1702. The church was a part of the Capuchin monastery founded in 1630 by Gerhard of Questenberg. This simple rectangular unadorned Capuchin-style building with a small courtyard in which there are Baroque sandstone sculptures of St Jude Thaddeus and two angels under vaulted roofs, also has an unpretentious interior. This church, built in the 1830s near Karlovo Square by Prague architect Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer, is an important high Baroque monument. This church is the first independent work by Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer. It was consecrated in 1729, shortly after the canonisation of John of Nepomuk. Ceiling vaults, containing magnificent frescoes painted by V. V. Reiner and depicting episodes from the saint’s life, arch over the octagonal nave.
