Maria Teresa had this wing built from 1766 – 1768 on a narrow parcel of land connecting the Ludwig Wing and the Institute of Noblewomen. In 1931, the building was reduced by one floor by architect Otto Rothmayer so that it would not block the view of the façade of the Vladislav Hall. At the same time, he created two hallways that today serve as exhibition spaces, and connected all levels with a spiral staircase. This originally Renaissance palace was built between 1545 and 1574 by the lords of Rožmberk (Rosenberg). In the mid-18th century, it was radically rebuilt into the Institute of Noblewomen. This was founded by Maria Theresa in 1753 and served to educate 30 impoverished aristocratic daughters until 1918. Its unique chapel, Renaissance hall, and the permanent exhibition, which aims to evoke the life of unmarried aristocratic ladies in the first half of the 19th century, is a part of the Prague Castle guided tour. Representative spaces in the Prague Castle are not normally open to visitors. The halls, salons, and parlours where the President of the Republic receives official visitors form a circuit on the first floor of each of the wings of the New Palace. Some of these served as representative and residential spaces of rulers in the 16th century. The entire New Palace complex was architecturally unified and modified during the reign of Maria Theresa. This powder tower was the largest of the cannon towers; however, its defence qualities were never tested. It was built at the end of the 15th century as part of the new castle fortifications. During the time of Rudolf II, an alchemist’s laboratory was located here; later it was a gunpowder store and a dungeon, and until the 20th century it served as the residence of the cathedral sexton.
