Church of Our Lady of the Snows (Kostel Panny Marie Sněžné)

This church in New Town holds two records among Prague’s sacral buildings. The first is the height of its vaults – 34 m – and it was never even completed to its planned size! Its imposing appearance can be best viewed from the adjoining Franciscan Garden. The church also features the highest column altar in Prague. Church of Our Lady beneath the Chain (Kostel Panny Marie pod řetězem)

From 1156 to 1159, the Knights Hospitaller received land south of the bishop’s court, near the bridgehead of the former Judith Bridge. The centre of the Hospitallers was the Church of Our Lady beneath the Chain, whose name reflects the fact that a chain was used either to seal the gate of the commandry or to block boats on the river to prevent them from passing through Prague without paying customs duties. Church of Our Lady before Týn (Chrám Matky Boží před Týnem) One of the most impressive Gothic religious buildings in Prague, it was built from the mid-14th to the early 16th centuries. At the end of the 17th century, the interior was reworked in Baroque style. The cathedral serves as an extensive gallery of Gothic, Renaissance and Early Baroque works, the most interesting of which include altar paintings by Karel Škréta and the tomb of the astronomer Tycho Brahe. The organ, dating from 1673, is the oldest in Prague. Cathedral of St Clement (Katedrála sv. Klimenta)

The Baroque church on the premises of the Clementinum was commissioned by the Jesuits and built by the architect Antonio Lurago between 1711 and 1715. The simple exterior opens to reveal an elaborate interior. Of special value are the sculptures by Matthias Braun on the six side altars, and a painting by Petr Brandl. Cathedral Church of Sts Cyril and Methodius (Katedrální chrám sv. Cyrila a Metoděje)

This Baroque church, designed by Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer and Paul Ignaz Bayer, was built from 1730 to 1736. The interior of the Orthodox church features stucco paintings by Michele Ignazio Palliardi and frescos by Jan Adam Schöpf. The church has a memorial to the paratroopers who hid in the church crypt after they assassinated Reichsprotektor Reinhard Heydrich in May 1942. Břevnov Monastery (Břevnovský klášter)

The monastery was founded in 993 AD by Boleslav II and Bishop Adalbert. The Benedictine complex’s current appearance, dating back to 1708 – 1745, is an example of High Baroque style. The monastery gardens are open to all and visitors may also take a guided tour. The Břevnov Monastery is also known for its brewery, the existence of which was documented as early as in the 13th century and whose production can be tasted in the monastery today. Bethlehem Chapel (Betlémská kaple)

The chapel was founded in 1391 for Czech sermons, and Jan Hus preached here from 1402 to 1413. In 1786 it was largely destroyed, and it was not until the 1950s that a replica of the original structure was built using the remains of the original walls. Today the space serves as a ceremonial hall for the Czech Technical University. In the adjacent Preacher’s House, an exhibition about the history of the chapel is located on the first floor and includes the residential quarters where Master Jan Hus lived. Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary at Strahov (Bazilika Nanebevzetí Panny Marie na Strahově)

At its core, this abbey, situated in the middle of the Premonstratensian monastery at Strahov, is a Romanesque basilica with a Gothic transept and two Renaissance towers (with Baroque modifications). The church received its current Baroque appearance between 1742 and 1758. The side walls are decorated with frescoes in cartouches depicting scenes from the life of St Norbert, the founder of the order. Basilica of Sts Peter and Paul at Vyšehrad (Bazilika sv. Petra a Pavla na Vyšehradě)

Once an hour, the Vyšehrad district is filled with the sound of bells from the chapter church, which has undergone a number of modifications in the 900 years since it was built. In 1903, its construction was finally completed, giving the church its current neo-Gothic appearance. The interior is richly decorated with Art Nouveau ornamental and figural wall paintings.
