This Premonstratensian monastery was founded in 1140. In the complex there is the church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the rare Strahov Library with a number of medieval manuscripts, maps and globes, the Baroque Theological Hall, the Classical Philosophy Hall decorated with frescoes, and the Strahov Gallery, one of the most significant Central European collections of Gothic painting, Rudolfian art, and Baroque and Rococo paintings. St Wenceslas Church at Zderaz was founded in the 12th century in the part of Prague called Zderaz; later it was rebuilt in the Gothic style. In the chancel, there are preserved mediaeval paintings. The net vault in the navy as well as the paintings here date back to the 16th century. The sculptures are works of renowned Czech sculptor and painter František Bílek. Since 1926, it has been administrated by the Czechoslovak Hussite Church. The most famous Baroque church in Prague is also one of the most valuable Baroque buildings north of the Alps. The dome has an impressive diameter of 20 m, and the interior height to the top of the lantern is over 49 m, making it the highest interior in Prague. It is also an outstanding example of high Baroque decoration. Concerts are held in the church year-round on the historic organ dating to the 18th century. This monumental Baroque church was built from 1732 – 1737 according to plans by Kilián Ignaz Dientzenhofer. The side facing Pařížská Street has since been subsequently rebuilt during modern times. The interior, with its interesting lighting effects, is dominated by a crystal crown chandelier from the Harrachov glassworks, donated by russian Tsar to the Orthodox Church. The original medieval church was not sufficient for the increasing amount of believers, and was therefore demolished. In 1771 a new late baroque church was built, precious for its architectural value and artistic quality of its interior. The Church of St. Prokop dominates this picturesque square at the foot of “upper Žižkov” and, along with the nearby Lipanská tram stop, forms one of a number of Žižkov’s focal points. Although the first written mention of this, the oldest of the three Prague rotundas, dates back to 1365, it was actually established at the end of the 11th century. Also of interest is its supposedly magical location – at the exact centre of the “urban cross” of old Prague, which connects the Cathedral of St Vitus, St Wenceslas and St Adalbert with the Rotunda of St Longin, the Church of St Clement in Old Town, and the now-destroyed Church of St Philip and St Jacob at Arbesovo náměstí. The rotunda of St Martin is the largest and oldest preserved rotunda in Prague. It was built in the second half of the 11th century. It has escaped demolition several times in its history. During the Thirty Years’ War it was used as a gunpowder store. The cannonball embedded in the façade to the right of the window is a reminder of the Prussian rampage in 1757. The rotunda of St Longin was built at the beginning of the 12th century and is the smallest and second oldest of the three preserved Romanesque rotundas in Prague. In the 17th century, it was expanded with the addition of a parallel Baroque nave. The rotunda currently serves the Order of St Lazarus and the Greek Catholic Church and the interior is decorated accordingly. Tours are available only upon prior agreement. The St Agnes Convent is one of the most important Gothic buildings in Prague. It was founded around 1230 AD by the Premyslid princess St Agnes of Bohemia along with her brother King Wenceslas I. The guided tour traces the history of the individual parts of the uniquely preserved medieval monastery.
