Behind reinforced doors on Pod Karlovem street, you’ll find an extensive maze of corridors and rooms. This bunker was built during the Cold War as a refuge for civilians in case of threat. The Classic 7 project is another great example of sensitive transformation of a historical building into a modern office complex. Dominating this extensive complex is a former steam mill from 1911 – the first automated flour mill in Prague, it was capable of grinding 200 tons of grain daily. During the reconstruction, architects successfully combined industrial architecture of the early 20th century with elements of modern architecture, creating an impressive, timeless space. Prague’s Jewish Museum, one of the oldest and continuously existing Jewish museums in the world, was founded in 1906. The mission of the museum is to document the history, traditions and customs of the Jewish population in Bohemia and preserve valuable artefacts from the Prague synagogues that were destroyed during the liquidation of the Prague ghetto. In addition to the permanent exhibitions, some of the buildings also hold concerts and temporary exhibitions. A three-aisled neo-Romanticist building with a rectangular floor plan, the original Libeň Synagogue was opened in 1858. Since its renovation, it has been used as a site for cultural activities in the area of fine art, theatre and music. The Jewish cemetery is a significant historical monument. There were over 40,000 persons buried here, among them many important rabbis and intellectuals. Mighty, representative tombstones mark the graves of the first Jewish entrepreneurs. There are Baroque and Empire tombstones in the cemetery, as well as tombstones decorated in the historicizing styles. This cemetery, with countless artistically valuable tombstones, was founded in 1890. Of greatest interest is the 1985 Memorial of Czechoslovak Jews who perished in the Shoah and the Resistance. On the site of the oldest Prague Jewish house of prayer called the “Old School”, the Spanish synagogue was built in 1868 in Moorish style by Vojtěch Ignác Ullmann and Josef Niklas. The gallery is located on the ground floor of the Jewish Museum complex. It was named after the well-known Prague naive painter Robert Guttmann.
