Prague Zoo

Prague Zoo is located in the Praha Troja municipal district. If you want to take a trip to the Prague Zoo, you can go by public transport, car, or bike, or you can even enrich your trip with a steamboat ride.

History:

It was opened in 1931 with the goal to “advance the study of zoology, protect wildlife, and educate the public” in the district of Troja in the north of Prague.

In 2013, the Zoo occupied a total of 58 hectares (140 acres) with 45 hectares (110 acres) in use for exhibits.

Prague Zoological Garden has contributed significantly to saving Przewalski’s horse. For many years, it was the biggest breeder of the species in the world.

Prague suffered the worst floods in its history (in 2002). A large part of the Zoo was under water and many animals died. The Zoo soon recovered.

Interests:

Total zoo area is 58ha and total exhibit area is 50ha. There are 12 pavilions and over 150 exhibits.

There are a lot of animals – 4716 specimens, 681 species. Specifically, 167 species of mammals (1074 specimens), 293 species of birds (1494 specimens), 132 species of reptiles and many others.

In the northern and southern parts of the zoological garden you can take a ride on a minitrain. Children up to the age of 10 may ride on the minitrain only if accompanied by a person older than 18 years of age.

• Southern part – the sightseeing trip is made up of two rides. Passengers get on under the stairs by the main entrance, for the second ride in front of the Sichuan pavilion.
• Northern part – the sightseeing trip is made up of two rides. Passengers get on by the northern entrance, for the second ride in front of the V Oboře refreshment stand.
• Price of a ride:
  • CZK 30 for an adult
  • CZK 20 for a child up to the age of 15
  • free of charge for a child up to the age of 2.

In the southern part of the zoo you will find the Children’s Zoo, in which direct contact with certain domestic animals (goats, horses,…) is permitted. For five crowns you can buy feed at vending machines and feed these animals yourself.

Throughout the zoo, there are many places for visitors to get food and drink, including restaurants, seasonal stands and drinks vending machines.
