St. Vitus Cathedral

St. Vitus Cathedral is the most important Czech Catholic church and landmark of Prague Castle. It is the largest and the most important temple in Prague. Apart from religious services, coronations of Czech kings and queens also took place here. The cathedral is a place of burial of several patron saints, sovereigns, noblemen and archbishops.

History:

Although completed in the 15th century, St. Vitus Cathedral was altered numerous times through the centuries as the city’s allegiances changed.

And while interior renovations are ongoing, there’s still much worth seeing, including numerous fine tombs, the Gothic northern portal with its Crucifixion sculpture, early Baroque altarpiece paintings dating from 1649, and one of Europe’s finest 17th-century pipe organs.

The cathedral includes many important artistic monuments from different centuries, including the period of completion, the most important are the works from the Gothic of the cathedral construction (eg. the Chapel of St. Wenceslas mosaic of the Last Judgement.)
